Nancy Sue Keil, 77, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away February 3, 2019,in
Rowlett, Texas. Nancy was born March 19, 1941, in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma. She and her family moved to Gainesville, Texas, in 1948. She
was educated through the Gainesville schools, graduating from Gainesville
High School in 1959 as valedictorian of her class. She continued her
education at North Texas State University (now UNT), double majoring in
journalism and French. She graduated magna cum laude in 1963.
Nancy began her professional journalism career as a reporter for the
Beaumont Journal. She then moved to Oklahoma City where she was an
editor on the staff for The Daily Oklahoman. She also taught journalism
classes at the University of Oklahoma. From there her career took her to
Miami, Florida, where she became editor of several
different sections of The Miami Herald. Around 1980 she returned to Texas
to be nearer her family and was employed by The Dallas Morning News as
copy editor. She retired in 2006.
Nancy Keil is survived by her sister Patty Keil Bowden of Gainesville;
sister-in-law Mary Szteiter Keil of Forney; nieces and nephews Melanie and
Michael Bess of Rockwall; Susan and Chris Sawyers of Conroe; Carrie and
Jake Fontenot of Little Elm, and Keil Bowden of Arlington, along with
several grandnieces and grandnephews. Nancy is also
survived by a wonderful group of girls from her Gainesville school days who
managed to stay together for more than six decades, enjoying each other's
lives...the "slumber parties" won't be the same without her.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, William (Bill) and Henrietta
Keil and her brother James (Jim) Keil.
No services are planned. The family requests that donations be made in her
name to Home Hospice of Cooke County, GISD Education Foundation, or to
a charity of your choice.
